Abstract: In the ancient China people set the constellations of the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions near the ecliptic to correspond to some enfeoffed states. The underlying significance of this correspondence is that a common totem as represented by a constellation was worshiped by people in an area. Some ancient groups of people in the south corresponded to the constellations in the north because these groups of people had migrated, and after the migration they still used their totems as the identifying standards. One more intriguing issue is that the Lunar Mansion "Zhenxiu" has been consistently translated as the "lintel beneath a carriage body in the sky." In our view, it has a more profound meaning, namely, the state "Zeng." The state "Zeng" was only one of many small states. The state "Zeng" completed the notion of the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions earlier than others so that the constellation was named after it due to this contribution.
