Abstract
The monthly averages of sunspot areas in solar cycles 12 to 22 Cycles are employed to analyze their stat istical characteristics. The parameter values of solar cycles and then the statistical characteristics of the parameter values of solar cycles are clearly given. Accordingly, the relation of the maximum smoothed monthly averages of sunspot areas and the maximum smoothed monthly averages of sunspot numbers, the relation of the smoothed monthly averages of the sunspot areas with the smoothed monthly averages of sunspot numbers, the relation of the difference of the ascend phase of the smoothed monthly averages of sunspot areas with the smoothedmonthly averages of sunspot numbers with solar cycles, the relat ion of the ascend phase of the smoothed monthly averages of sunspot areas and their maximum values, the relation of the ascend phase of the smoothed monthly averages of sunspot areas and their cycle length, and the relation of the maximum of the smoothed monthly averages of sunspot areas and the asymmetry are presented in this paper. In the mean time, the comparison of the monthly averages of sunspot areas with the monthly averages of sunspot numbers is made. Our results show that the maximum time of sunspot numbers and the maximum time of sunspot areas are not always the same, and the ascent periods of the sunspot- number cycles differ from those of the sunspot-area cycles, and the Waldmeier effect of the monthly averages of sunspot active cycles is more obvious than the monthly averages of the cycles described by sunspot areas. The other stat istical characteristics of cycles described by the monthly averages of sunspot areas are also given.
