An Experimental Optical-Fiber Integral Field Spectrograph

  • Among several types of instruments used to study extended astronomical objects the Integral Field Spectroscopy has been received wide attention because of its capability of obtaining spectra across the surface of an extended object simultaneously. We aim to build an Integral Field Spectrograph (IFS) for the Lijiang 2.4 m Telescope of the Yunnan Observatory. We decide to carry out an experiment of IFS in laboratory. As the first step,we have also finished some tests with the experimental IFS system including optical adjustment, spectral calibration, and measurement of some solar absorption-line spectra. We have subsequently attached this instrument to the 2.4 m telescope and have obtained some useful data.Through the experiment we have found some problems with the manufacturing of the optical fibers used. These should provide the basis of our work ahead.
