The Stellar Physics Division

More Information
  • Published Date: December 14, 1983
  • The Stellar Physics Division, the former group for selecting sites which was set up in 1972, was founded in 1977. Thcre are 36 staff members in the Division, among them there are an ascociate astronomer, 5 assistant research fellows and 5 engineers. Since 1972, the tasks for selecting sites of the Phoenix Hill in Kimmine and the Binchman in Yunnan Province have been finished, the monunting; and testing of a 1-m R.C. C telcscope, a Coude, spectrograph and a 35-cm telescope have also been completed, the foundatnenlal optical and electric laboratories have been esiablished and an integrated photometer at the visible wavelengths and an infrarrd photometer, which are controlled by a microprocessor and used to proccss data have successfully been developed, the research work tor stellar physics being preliminarily provided with the material conditions or prerequisite. In recent years, the observational researches have concentrated on the subjects such as globular clusters and their variables, close binaries, carbon stars and laic-type long-period variables of Mira type, Be stars, Ap stars and stars of BL Lac type, etc. The theoretical researches on the evolution of stars, stellar atmospheres, stellar wind shock waves, high energy actrophysics, relativistic asirophysics and cosmology have actively been made.
